2022 Asian Weightlifting Championships Full Results & Highlights

Weightlifting is roaring in 2022. From Oct. 6 to 16 in Manama, Bahrain, the strongest Olympic lifters in the East gathered in Manama, Bahrain to partake in the International Weightlifting Federation’s (IWF) Asian Weightlifting Championships (AWC).

Manama was fraught with excitement, exhilaration, and plenty of surprises for fan and athlete alike. As one of the final prominent weightlifting events before the 2022 World Championships commences in December, Bahrain was a battlefield — and the stakes as high as ever.

For the first time in the event’s history, the lifting at the 2022 AWC was broadcasted nearly worldwide via a pay-per-view live stream courtesy of Weightlifting House.

Highlights & Statistics

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the 2022 AWC was Team China’s relative underperformance.

China, which historically dominates weightlifting competitions from the regional level to the Olympic Games (Chinese lifters won as many gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics as athletes from all other countries combined), won 22 medals altogether. Kazakhstan took 23, and Indonesia secured 24 cumulative awards.

However, Team China took home far more golds than any other country — 16 altogether, beating out Vietnam and Kazakhstan, each with nine.

Many of China’s mainstay athletes, current World Record holders, and former Olympians were also not present in Manama this year. The country also opted to send only eight athletes instead of a full 10-strong roster, indicating that they may be prioritizing their veterans for the upcoming Worlds in December.

Further, there were no new Senior-level World Records set in Bahrain this year. While new records are never guaranteed, it’s something of a shock to see a recordless event take place in the East given the caliber of the athletes there.

A vast majority of the men’s World Records, as well as every women’s Senior World Record, are held by athletes from the Asian region. But none fell in Bahrain this year.

Still, a so-called “underwhelming” Asian competition (if you expected a slew of records) is also an opportunity for new athletes to earn their time in the limelight.

From Bahrain to Bogotá

Before the year is out, weightlifters from Asia and all over the globe will congregate in Bogotá, Colombia, for the 2022 World Weightlifting Championships.

While the highs of this year’s AWC may not have climbed further than times past, there was still plenty of spectacular lifting on the platform. A trend that hopefully continues into the end of the calendar year and culminates when Worlds kicks off on December 5, 2022.
